Each of the 126 lamposts dotting the perimeter of the lake was donated by an organization or an individual. In 1925, Lake Merritt's "Necklace of Lights" (3,400 shining bulbs) was lit for the first time during the Dons of Peralta Water Festival and shone until 1941 when World War II blackout conditions are enforced.

In 1963, the Wildlife Refuge at Lake Merritt was registered as a National Historic Landmark and became the nation's oldest wildlife refuge with 140 acres. The lake is only eight to ten feet deep, and boast as home to shrimp, fish, birds, clams, and crabs.
